Player Profile: Benjamin Main
What do a prairie star, a tennis court, and a racquet have in common? There could be several answers for this question and one of them might be Benjamin “Ben” Main. Ben is a junior who plays tennis at UIS. He participates in both single and doubles competition for the team.
Main is the son of Larry and Sindy Main. He is 20 years old and comes to UIS from Freeport, IL, which is about two hours west of Chicago. He played tennis all four years of high school before deciding to come to UIS.
“My favorite tennis memory has to be my junior year of high school at the Illinois State High School Tennis Tournament,” Main said of his tennis career. “ My doubles partner and I were playing some great tennis and we ended up beating three ranked opponents and earned All-State recognition.”
Also while he was in high school, Main served as team captain for the tennis team and was a three time state qualifier for Freeport High School. He was also on the swimming and football teams where he also served as a captain.
After high school Main knew he wanted to play tennis in college. He was on a visit at Lewis University where he watched Lewis play against UIS in tennis. He then decided to look at UIS. After meeting with head coach Manny Velasco, he knew that UIS was the right place to go.
At UIS Main is a chemistry major with a minor in biology. “What I enjoy the most (about playing at UIS) is being able to continue to compete at a high level,” Main said. “However, the camaraderie is a close second. We have a relatively young team, but our team chemistry is impeccable. We lost a great group of seniors last year, and I am amazed at how well we are all getting along this year despite the addition of three new players.”
During Main’s freshman year he was selected to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team and also was named to the UIS Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and made the Dean’s List for the both semesters. In his sophomore year he was again selected for the All-GLVC conference team were he was also on the UIS Chancellor’s Academic Honor Roll and was on the Dean’s list both semesters.
After graduating from UIS, Main is planning on attending medical school where he will continue his education. At this time he does not know where he would like to go for medical school, but he is taking his MCAT test to get a better idea.
You can see Main and the rest of the men’s and women’s tennis teams in action next semester at Washington Park. The men’s team is currently 1-1 with a win over North Central and a loss to Lindenwood.
